So, you’re signed up for a murder mystery game with your friends. Congratulations, detective! Whether you’re playing to experience the thrill of becoming a character or you have your sights set on winning, it’s always satisfying to be the one who pieces together the clues and solves the mystery.

I design murder mystery kits at Harvest Moon Mysteries, and while every game has its own twists and turns, I’ve put together some tried-and-true tips that will help you crack the case.

1. Talk to Everyone

Talk to as many other characters as possible. Everyone has a reason for being there, and some of those reasons may be more sinister than others. Take notes on alibis, motives, and any suspicious behavior. Pay attention to inconsistencies in their stories—if something doesn’t add up, it’s worth pressing further.

2. Find a Trustworthy Sidekick

This one is trickier than it sounds since nearly every character in my mystery kits has something to hide. But teaming up with someone can be extremely beneficial. Exchange theories, compare notes, and use each other’s relationships, abilities, or items to extract key information. Just keep an eye on them—sometimes the biggest betrayals come from those closest to you!

3. Observe Like Sherlock Holmes

Not all clues come from direct conversations. Watch who others are whispering with, who they avoid, and how they react to key plot developments. Suspicious behavior can reveal more than words ever could.

4. Ask the Tough Questions

Don’t just wait for information—go after it! Ask other players directly: “Who do you think the murderer is? Why?” or “Have you seen anyone acting suspiciously?” Sometimes, catching someone off guard can get them to slip up and reveal more than they intended.

5. Beware of Red Herrings

Every murder mystery has false leads designed to throw you off track. If a clue seems too obvious or contradicts reliable information, it might be a red herring. Make a note of these, but don’t let them distract you from the real evidence.

6. Follow the Motive

In many mysteries, the key to solving the crime is understanding why someone would commit murder. Was it for money, revenge, jealousy, or a dark secret? If a character has something to gain from the victim’s demise, they’re worth investigating further.

7. Take Notes Like a Pro

There’s a lot of information flying around, and your memory won’t catch everything. Jot down key details, contradictions, and theories. A well-organized detective always has the advantage.

8. Use Your Resources Wisely

Many mystery games include abilities, items, or special mechanics that can reveal secrets. Make sure you’re using them effectively, and if you’re unsure how something works, ask the game host for clarification.

Ready to Solve Your Own Mystery?

Now that you’re armed with these tips, it’s time to put your detective skills to the test! Whether you’re a first-time investigator or a seasoned sleuth, these strategies will help you uncover the truth and (hopefully) identify the culprit before the night is over.
